church of the fishers

scope of work: architectural concept
industry: residential
size: 18,500 sf

Calling inspiration from symbols of early Christianity in the fishing boats often used by Jesus in his travels, the cross as a pathway, and the secret mark of the persecuted church the ichthus-fish, the design of a modern church was created. For the sanctuary, an overturned mass timber fishing boat, was the main design element, creating a space that is warm and inviting. To call back to the connection between God and man, the boat was split along the hull opening a space for natural light to poor in. Utilizing the shape of the cross for direction, a natural walking path was created with the arms of the cross between the fellowship hall, classrooms, offices, prayer room, and parking. A second walking path was cut through the space with the head of the cross starting at the main entrance and the foot of the cross ending at the altar. Using natural light, mass timber and meaningful symbolism this concept design aims to draw the occupant’s eye, mind, and soul to God.
